Short answer: Claude Projects have no separate price. They come with every Claude plan. Free allows up to 5 projects, Pro ($20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly) and Max (from $100 a month) allow unlimited projects, and Team costs $25 a standard seat a month ($20 billed yearly) with project sharing. What you really pay for is usage, not project slots.

Most people price Claude Projects at the point where a free account stops being enough: a fifth client project is full, a long report burns through the session allowance, or a colleague needs to see the same files. Below is what each plan costs in the US, what it changes for Projects, and when a Claude subscription is the wrong purchase for a library of documents you keep coming back to.
Claude Projects pricing by plan
Anthropic sells plans, not Projects. Every plan includes Projects, and the plan decides how many you can have, whether you can share them, and how much work you can do before the usage limit makes you wait. Prices below are from Anthropic's pricing page.
| Plan | US price | Projects | Sharing | Usage | Yearly cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Up to 5 | No | Base allowance | $0 |
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly | Unlimited | No | At least 5x Free per 5-hour session | $200 up front |
| Max 5x | $100 a month | Unlimited | No | 5x Pro | $1,200 |
| Max 20x | $200 a month | Unlimited | No | 20x Pro | $2,400 |
| Team standard seat | $25 a seat a month, or $20 billed yearly | Unlimited | Yes, inside the team | More than Pro | $480 for the 2-seat minimum |
| Team premium seat | $125 a seat a month, or $100 billed yearly | Unlimited | Yes, inside the team | 5x a standard seat | $2,400 for 2 seats |
| Enterprise | $20 a seat a month billed yearly, plus usage at API rates | Unlimited | Yes | Billed by use | From $4,800 for 20 seats, before usage |
Team is sold for 2 to 150 seats, so a solo consultant cannot buy one Team seat to unlock sharing. Enterprise has a 20-seat minimum. For one person, the realistic choices are Free, Pro or Max.
Are Claude Projects free?
Yes, with a cap. A free Claude account can create up to 5 projects, each with its own instructions and knowledge files. That is enough to test whether one workspace per client helps. The limits you hit first on Free are the usage allowance and the fact that a project's files must fit the context window, with no retrieval to stretch it.
On paid plans, Anthropic switches on retrieval when a project's knowledge approaches the context limit, which lets a project hold up to about ten times more. On Free, a full project is simply full. If your test project already struggles, you have learned the useful thing: your material is larger than a chat window, and the fix is not a fifth project.
How much does Claude Pro cost for Projects?
Claude Pro costs $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month on a yearly plan paid as $200 up front. It unlocks unlimited projects, retrieval for large project knowledge and at least five times the Free usage per session. There is no add-on fee for Projects, and Pro does not include sharing.
For most individual professionals, Pro is the plan that makes Projects practical. The catch is that Anthropic does not publish a fixed number of messages or files for Pro. A morning of questions against a 300-page report can use up a session faster than a day of short chats, because long documents take a big share of every message.
Is Claude Max worth it for Projects?
Max is worth it when you hit Pro's usage limit most working days and Claude is central to the work you bill for. It costs $100 a month for 5x Pro usage or $200 for 20x. It does not raise the 30 MB per-file cap in project knowledge, add sharing, or change how retrieval picks passages.
That is the part people miss. Max buys more questions per session. It does not make a project understand more of your archive at once. If your frustration is that Claude answers from some of your files and ignores others, five times the usage gives you five times as many of those answers.
What you get for the money, plan by plan
The per-file rules are the same everywhere, so the plan price is mostly a price on time and access:
- Project files can be up to 30 MB each on every plan, with no fixed file count as long as the total fits the context window (about 500 pages of text on paid plans by Anthropic's own description).
- Chat attachments are separate: up to 20 files per chat, up to 500 MB each, PDFs up to 1,000 pages. Our Claude file upload limit guide covers what triggers "file too large" and how the two limits interact.
- Sharing exists only inside a Team or Enterprise organization. A client outside your workspace cannot open your project.
- Usage is the real meter, and only Max and premium Team seats raise it meaningfully.
Run the yearly numbers before you pick. A consultant paying for Pro on a yearly plan spends $200. The same person on Max 5x spends $1,200. A two-person practice on Team standard seats spends $480 a year billed yearly, or $600 billed monthly, and gets sharing between the two of them but still not with clients.
Claude Team pricing for a small consultancy
Claude Team costs $25 per standard seat a month, or $20 billed yearly, for 2 to 150 seats. Premium seats are $125 a month, or $100 billed yearly, with five times the usage. Team adds shared projects, central billing and admin controls, which matters once two or more people work the same clients.
A small firm usually mixes seats: a premium seat for the partner who drafts every report, standard seats for everyone else. Before buying, check what you need shared. If the goal is for your team to work from the same files, Team does that well. If the goal is for clients to ask questions of your published material, Team does not help, because every person who opens a project needs a seat in your organization.
Many practices pair one shared library with a separate tool for the deliverable itself. Once the research is done, the next job is usually a document the client signs, and a dedicated tool that can turn a client brief into a finished proposal handles that faster than a chat window.
When a document library is cheaper than a bigger Claude plan
Claude Projects are built for one task at a time: a contract review, a launch plan, a quarter of research. They get expensive when you use them as a permanent archive of everything you have written, because you start paying for Max to push more questions through a workspace that was never meant to hold years of material.
That is the job a Claude Projects alternative built as one document library does differently. MentalClone keeps all your documents, notes, transcripts and vault exports in one place, answers only from that material, and tells you when the answer is not in it. Clients get a private link and ask questions without an account, up to 100 a day per link.
| Need | Cheapest Claude route | Yearly cost | MentalClone route | Yearly cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ask questions of your own archive, solo | Pro | $200 | Starter | $288 |
| Heavy daily questions against long reports | Max 5x | $1,200 | Professional | $588 |
| Clients ask your material without an account | Not offered | Not offered | Starter, private links | $288 |
To be fair to Claude: if you want a strong general assistant for writing, coding and analysis, and your files for any one job fit comfortably in a project, Pro at $17 a month yearly is hard to beat. MentalClone is narrower. It does not write code or browse the web. It answers from your own files in your own register, which is worth paying for when those files are what clients pay you for.
Questions people ask about Claude Projects pricing
Do you have to pay for Claude Projects?
No. Free accounts get up to 5 projects at no cost. You pay only when you need more than 5, retrieval for large project knowledge, or more usage, which starts with Pro at $20 a month or $17 a month billed yearly. There is no separate Projects fee on any plan.
How many projects can you have on Claude Pro?
Claude Pro allows unlimited projects. Each project can hold files up to 30 MB each with no fixed file count, and retrieval stretches capacity up to about ten times the context window when a project fills up. The practical ceiling is the Pro usage limit per 5-hour session, not the number of projects.
Can I share a Claude project with a client?
Only if the client joins your Team or Enterprise organization, which means paying for their seat. Projects are shareable inside an organization, not by public link. If you want clients to question your material without an account, a tool with private client links, such as MentalClone's Starter plan, fits that job.
Is Claude cheaper than ChatGPT for Projects?
For one person the entry prices match: Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus both cost $20 a month. Claude Pro gives unlimited projects with no fixed file count, while ChatGPT Plus caps a project at 25 files. Our ChatGPT Projects pricing breakdown lists the ChatGPT side plan by plan.
If you are still deciding, try the question box at the top of this page against our sample material. Three questions show you whether an answer drawn only from documents, with a plain "that is not in the files" when it should say so, is what you were trying to buy Claude Max for.
