Short answer: Claude accepts up to 20 files per chat, each up to 500 MB, and PDFs up to 1,000 pages. Files added to a Project are capped at 30 MB each, with no fixed file count, as long as the total fits the context window. Paid plans stretch Project capacity up to 10x with retrieval. There is no published daily file count. What stops you in practice is the usage limit of your plan.

Most people look this up after Claude refuses a file in the middle of real work, usually a long contract, a folder of client reports or a PDF that is "too large" for no obvious reason. Below are the limits from Anthropic's own help center and pricing page, what each plan changes, why the upload limit gets reached, and when paying for a bigger Claude plan stops being the right fix for a pile of documents you question every week.

Claude file upload limit per chat and per project

Anthropic sets different rules for files you attach to a single chat and files you add to a Project's knowledge. The difference matters, because the Project limit is the one people hit when they try to build a permanent workspace.

Where you uploadMax file sizeNumber of filesWhat Claude reads
A single chat500 MB per fileUp to 20 files per chatText and visuals in PDFs up to 100 pages, text only from 101 to 1,000 pages
Project knowledge30 MB per fileUnlimited, but the total must fit the context windowText extraction only, except multimodal PDFs
ImagesUp to 8,000 x 8,000 pixelsCounted with the 20 files per chatJPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP

Supported document types are PDF, DOCX, CSV, TXT, HTML, ODT, RTF, EPUB, JSON and XLSX. Spreadsheets only upload if you have turned on code execution and file creation in your settings. For anything other than a PDF, Claude extracts the text and ignores embedded images, so a Word file full of charts arrives as words only.

Claude file upload limit by plan

The per-file numbers above are the same on every plan. What the plan changes is how much Claude can hold at once and how long you can keep working before the usage limit stops you.

PlanUS priceProjectsRetrieval for large ProjectsUsage
Free$0Up to 5 projectsNoBase allowance
Pro$20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly ($200 up front)UnlimitedYes, up to 10x capacityMore than Free
Max 5x$100 a monthUnlimitedYes5x Pro
Max 20x$200 a monthUnlimitedYes20x Pro
Team$25 per seat a month billed monthly, less yearlyUnlimited, shareableYesMore than Pro

On paid plans the context window is 200,000 tokens by default, which Anthropic describes as about 500 pages of text, and the newest models in chat go to 1 million tokens. That is the ceiling a Project has to fit inside before retrieval takes over.

What is the Claude file upload limit for Pro?

Claude Pro allows 20 files per chat at up to 500 MB each, and Project files up to 30 MB each with no fixed count. When a Project's knowledge approaches the context limit, Pro switches on retrieval and can hold up to about ten times more. Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly.

The number that bites Pro users is rarely the file size. It is the usage limit. Long PDFs eat a large share of each message's budget, so a morning spent asking questions of a 300-page report can use up a session faster than a day of short chats. Anthropic does not publish a fixed count of files or messages for Pro. It only says Pro gets more usage than Free and Max gets 5x or 20x more than Pro.

How many files can I upload to a Claude project?

There is no fixed file count for a Claude Project. Each file can be up to 30 MB, and the total text has to fit the model's context window. On Free, that is the hard stop. On Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, retrieval kicks in as the Project fills up and expands capacity up to ten times, loading only the parts that match each question.

That retrieval mode is good news with a trade-off. Claude stops reading every file for every answer and pulls the passages it judges relevant. For most questions that works well. For "summarize everything we told this client in the last year," it means some files may not be consulted at all.

Why Claude says upload limit reached or file too large

There are four common causes, and the error message does not always tell you which one you hit.

  • The PDF is over 1,000 pages. Claude rejects it with "Uploaded file is too large." Split it into parts.
  • A Project file is over 30 MB. The chat allows 500 MB, but Project knowledge does not. Compress the PDF or split it.
  • The Project is full. On Free, once the total content passes the context window, you cannot add more. On paid plans, retrieval stretches this, but there is still a ceiling.
  • You hit the usage limit. This is not a file error at all. Your plan's allowance for the current session is spent, and every new message waits until it resets.

Anthropic's own tip for large documents is to divide them into smaller sections. That works for one report. It is a poor long-term answer for someone whose whole job lives in hundreds of files.

Is there a Claude file upload limit per day?

No. Anthropic does not publish a daily file count for Claude. The practical daily ceiling is your plan's usage limit, which resets in rolling sessions with weekly limits on top. Uploading long PDFs uses more of that allowance per message than short text, so heavy document work hits the ceiling sooner.

Claude upload limit on the Free plan

Free accounts use the same per-file ceilings as paid ones: 20 files per chat, 500 MB per file, 1,000 pages per PDF, 30 MB per Project file. The differences are a cap of five Projects, no retrieval for oversized Projects and the smallest usage allowance. For a few files a week it is plenty. For daily work on client material it runs out quickly.

When a bigger Claude plan is the wrong fix

Upgrading to Max at $100 or $200 a month buys more messages. It does not change the 30 MB Project file cap, and it does not make a Project into a long-term library of your own work. Many people who hit Claude's limits are doing the same thing every week: dropping the same contracts, proposals and meeting notes into new chats so Claude can answer questions about what they already wrote.

If that sounds familiar, the job is different from what Claude is built for. You are not asking a general assistant for help. You are asking your own archive what it says. That is the gap MentalClone fills. You upload your documents once into a permanent private library, and each answer is drawn only from the files that best match your question, in your own voice, with a plain "that is not in your documents" when it is not. Both paid plans include unlimited documents and messages, so there is no five-hour session to wait out.

The honest trade-offs: Claude reads much longer PDFs than MentalClone, which handles text PDFs up to 120 pages and scanned PDFs up to 40, and Claude Pro at $20 is cheaper than MentalClone's Starter plan at 199 PLN a month (about $54) or about $27 a month billed yearly. Claude is the better tool for writing code, analyzing one huge file or general questions. MentalClone is the better tool when the answer has to come from your own work and sound like you. You can compare both plans on the MentalClone pricing page.

How Claude compares with other tools on file limits

ToolUS priceMain file limitFiles stay between chats
Claude Pro$20 a month20 files per chat, 30 MB per Project fileYes, in Projects
ChatGPT Plus$20 a month80 uploads every 3 hours, 25 files per projectYes, in projects
Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM)Free tier, Google AI Pro $19.99 a monthSources per notebook and a compute quotaYes, per notebook
AskYourPDF Premium$11.99 a month billed yearly50 documents a dayYes, Knowledge Base
MentalClone Starter199 PLN a month (about $54)No daily or per-chat file count, 100 MB per fileYes, one permanent library

If you are deciding between assistants, the ChatGPT file upload limit by plan lays out OpenAI's equivalent numbers, and the NotebookLM pricing and limits article covers Google's notebook caps. If your files are mostly PDFs from other people that you read once, the AskYourPDF alternative comparison is the closer fit.

One practical note for anyone uploading contracts. Claude can answer questions about a signed agreement, but it will not remind you when that agreement auto-renews. If most of your uploads are client and vendor contracts, a contract management tool that tracks renewal dates and obligations does that part better than any chat window.

Questions people ask about the Claude upload limit

How many files can I upload to Claude at once?

Up to 20 files in a single chat, each up to 500 MB. Images count toward the same 20. PDFs can be up to 1,000 pages, though Claude reads charts and images only in PDFs of 100 pages or fewer. In a Project there is no fixed count, but each file is capped at 30 MB.

How many files can I upload to Claude Pro project?

There is no fixed number. Each Project file can be up to 30 MB, and the combined text has to fit Claude's context window. On Pro, when a Project gets close to that limit, retrieval switches on and expands capacity up to ten times by loading only the passages relevant to each question.

What is the Claude upload limit in MB?

500 MB per file in a chat and 30 MB per file in a Project. Images can be up to 8,000 by 8,000 pixels. A file under these sizes can still fail if it is a PDF over 1,000 pages or if its extracted text is too long for the remaining context.

What is the Claude upload limit for PDF?

A PDF can be up to 1,000 pages. For PDFs of 100 pages or fewer, Claude reads both text and visuals such as charts and tables drawn as images. From 101 to 1,000 pages it reads text only. Anything longer returns "Uploaded file is too large" and has to be split.

Why does Claude say upload limit exceeded?

Usually one of four things: the PDF is over 1,000 pages, a Project file is over 30 MB, the Project's total content no longer fits the context window, or you have used up your plan's usage allowance for the current session. The last one is not a file problem. It clears when the session resets.

Does Claude Max increase the file upload limit?

Not the file limits. Max 5x at $100 and Max 20x at $200 a month give 5 or 20 times Pro's usage, so you can send more messages about large files before hitting a limit. The 500 MB chat cap, 30 MB Project cap and 1,000-page PDF cap stay the same.
