Short answer: ChatGPT Projects are included on every plan, including Free. Plus costs $20 a month for 25 files per project, while Pro starts at $100 a month for 40. If client documents are your main reason to upgrade, compare a document library before paying for the extra space.

For a consultant or coach, the buying decision comes down to what needs fixing. Do you need a better general assistant, more room for client files, or a way for clients to question your material themselves? Those needs can lead to different subscriptions.
ChatGPT Projects pricing by plan
There is no separate Projects subscription. Your ChatGPT plan determines the file allowance, alongside upload and storage limits.
| Plan | US price | Files per project | Upload rate | Storage | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 5 | 3 file uploads a day | 500 MB | Trying a small client project |
| Go | $8 a month | 25 | 80 uploads every 3 hours | 4 GB | Keeping modest document sets |
| Plus | $20 a month | 25 | 80 uploads every 3 hours | 20 GB | Client work alongside general assistance |
| Pro | From $100 a month | 40 | 80 uploads every 3 hours | 100 GB | Longer analysis and heavier assistant use |
| Business | Priced per seat, check OpenAI's pricing page for the current seat price. At least 2 users. | 40 | 80 uploads every 3 hours | 20 GB per user | Consultancies buying workspace access |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing | 40 | Check current OpenAI limits | Confirm with OpenAI | Organizations arranging a custom plan |
Go and Plus have the same project file count. Paying for Plus increases storage, but it doesn't make a crowded project hold more documents. Business pricing also requires a seat calculation before you compare it with an individual subscription.
Is ChatGPT Projects free?
Yes. ChatGPT Projects are available on Free at $0, with 5 files per project, 3 file uploads a day and 500 MB of library storage. You can test whether keeping client material together helps before subscribing. A paid plan raises the allowances; it isn't required to create a project.
That makes Free a useful rehearsal with a small set of working documents. It becomes awkward when you need to add a batch of notes before a client call. The daily upload allowance and the project file count are separate constraints, so a project with room left can still refuse another upload that day.
How many files can a ChatGPT project hold?
A project holds 5 files on Free, 25 on Go or Plus, and 40 on Pro, Business or Enterprise. Every plan has a 512 MB ceiling per file, a 2 million token limit per text document and project instructions up to 8,000 characters.
File capacity doesn't tell you how much text an answer can consider. On Plus, the fast model reads about 40 pages per answer, or about 320 with reasoning. Pro raises those figures to about 250 and 680. Accepting a file and considering its entire contents are different things.
Our ChatGPT file upload limit guide explains the separate limits. Moving the material into a custom GPT won't expand the allowance: a custom GPT holds 20 knowledge files. The custom GPT alternative comparison covers the library approach if that ceiling is already too low.
Is ChatGPT Plus enough for Projects?
Plus is enough when each client's working set fits comfortably inside 25 files and you also want ChatGPT for everyday work. Picture a consultant keeping one project per client. The proposal and contract go in first, followed by discovery notes, interview transcripts, progress reports, spreadsheets and workshop decks.
Each document is useful on its own. Together, they fill 25 slots fast. Soon, adding the latest meeting notes means deciding whether an older report still matters. That is a poor moment to discover you removed the document explaining an earlier recommendation.
Before upgrading, separate current working material from reference material you rarely question. If that leaves enough room, Plus may be the sensible buy. If you keep bringing archived reports back into the conversation, the problem is the size of the reference library.
Is ChatGPT Pro worth it for more project files?
Pro starts at $100 a month and raises the project allowance from 25 to 40 files. That buys 15 more files per project. If those extra slots are your entire reason for subscribing, compare the alternatives before accepting the higher recurring bill.
Pro also brings 100 GB of storage and more text read per answer. Those differences matter when long document analysis is central to paid work. They matter less when you mainly need to find a recommendation buried in your own past reports.
You could retain a smaller working set on Plus, consolidate related notes, or move reference documents into a library. Consolidation keeps the file count down but creates maintenance work. A library is worth comparing when preserving separate source documents matters more than having everything inside ChatGPT.
What ChatGPT Projects cost a consultant per year
The comparison below annualizes the listed ChatGPT monthly prices and uses MentalClone's annual billing prices.
| Plan | Annual cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Plus | $240 | 25 files per project, 20 GB storage, general assistant |
| ChatGPT Pro | From $1,200 | 40 files per project, 100 GB storage, more text read per answer |
| MentalClone Starter | $288 | No document cap, answers from uploaded files |
| MentalClone Professional | $588 | No document cap, answers from uploaded files |
MentalClone Starter costs $49 a month or $288 a year, equivalent to $24 a month. Professional costs $99 a month or $588 a year, equivalent to $49 a month. For a document library, Starter is cheaper than Pro at its starting price. It still costs more than Plus over a year.
When a document library beats a bigger ChatGPT plan
A library fits work that repeatedly returns to your own reports, methods and notes. MentalClone has no document cap on Starter or Professional. It answers only from your uploaded documents, uses your own writing register and says when the files don't cover a question.
It accepts PDF, DOCX, DOC, XLSX, CSV, RTF, TXT, Markdown, EPUB, EML, PowerPoint, images and scans, plus ZIP vault exports, up to 100 MB per file. That per-file ceiling is lower than ChatGPT's, so check your largest documents before choosing.
Private links let clients ask questions without an account, with up to 100 questions a day per link and up to 20 active links. For a coach sharing reference material between sessions, that access pattern may matter more than another project folder.
The ChatGPT Projects alternative with no 25 file limit comparison explains the fit. If you're also considering Anthropic's assistant, the Claude Projects alternative comparison examines the same library decision.
Someone who only needs to chat with a single contract or policy PDF now and then may have little reason to maintain a permanent library. Choose around the documents you actually return to.
When ChatGPT Projects is the right buy
ChatGPT is a good buy when documents sit alongside web research, images, code and voice in your daily work. MentalClone has no voice, mobile app or web search. Its document focus won't replace all the reasons you might already pay for Plus.
If your client projects fit, keeping them in a subscription you already use is sensible. Pro deserves consideration when longer analysis and broader assistant use justify its price together. Paying for a library as well only makes sense if it solves a recurring problem.
ChatGPT Projects pricing questions
Do ChatGPT Projects cost extra?
No. Projects are included on every ChatGPT plan, including Free, without a separate Projects fee. Your subscription determines how many files each project holds, along with storage and upload allowances. Paying for a higher plan changes those limits rather than adding a separate charge for each project.
Can I share a ChatGPT project with a client?
Projects can be shared with other ChatGPT users in a workspace or by invitation. The people you share with work inside ChatGPT, so they need an account. If account creation gets in the way, MentalClone offers private client links that let recipients question your uploaded material without creating an account.
What happens when a ChatGPT project is full?
At the file cap, you need to remove files, consolidate documents, move material into another project or choose a plan with a higher allowance before adding more. Waiting won't increase a full project's capacity. Check storage and upload limits separately, because those can also prevent a file from being added.
Compare MentalClone plans and billing options, then create your account if a document library fits your client work.
