For readers whose best ideas are also in their own files

Readwise Alternative and Readwise Reader Alternative for Your Own Files

Short answer: if you want a reading app, Recall is the closest Readwise alternative, with AI chat over what you save. If you keep paying for Readwise but the thing you actually search for is something you wrote yourself, a proposal, a client report, a talk transcript, you need one library that holds your highlights and your own documents together. MentalClone does that, answers only from those files, and starts at $24 a month billed yearly.

Why people look for a Readwise alternative

Readwise is good at what it was built for: collecting highlights from Kindle, Apple Books, Instapaper and the web, then bringing them back to you in a daily review. People start shopping around for one of four reasons, and only one of them is about price.

The daily review stopped landing

Five highlights a morning is lovely for a month. After a year, a lot of subscribers admit they archive the email unread and wonder what the $120 a year is buying.

Reader is the only reason to pay full price

Lite at $5.59 does not include Reader. If you mostly want a read-later app, you compare Reader against other read-later apps.

The answer you need is in your own work

What you hunt for at 11 p.m. before a client call is rarely a book quote. It is your own memo from 2023, and that never went into Readwise.

Two libraries, two searches

Highlights in Readwise, reports in Drive, notes in Obsidian. Every question becomes three searches and a guess about where the thing lives.

Readwise alternatives compared on price and AI

US list prices from each vendor's own pricing page. The column that matters most is the last one: what the AI can actually see when you ask it something.

Tool Price Built around Best for What the AI answers from
Readwise Lite $5.59 a month, billed yearly Highlight review and search Kindle readers who love the daily review No Reader, so no library chat
Readwise Full $9.99 a month yearly ($119.88), $12.99 monthly Highlights plus the Reader read-later app Heavy readers exporting to Obsidian or Notion Your Reader library, through Global Ghostreader
Recall Plus $10 a month, billed yearly Saved articles, videos and PDFs with summaries People who save more than they highlight Content you saved into Recall
Recall Max $38 a month, billed yearly Same, with higher usage Daily heavy users of Recall's AI Content you saved into Recall
MentalClone Starter $49 a month, or $288 a year ($24 a month) Your own documents plus imported highlights Consultants, coaches and writers who reuse their own work Only the files you uploaded, in your own voice, and it says when they do not cover a question

Your highlights and your own work in one answer

Readwise keeps what other people wrote. Your client reports, proposals, workshop decks and meeting notes sit somewhere else, and that split is why so many highlights never get used. MentalClone puts both in one private library. Ask a question and the answer pulls from whichever files actually cover it, then names those files.

It answers in the first person and in the register of your own writing, because it learns from what you wrote. When nothing in your library covers the question, it tells you so. That is the difference from a general chatbot that fills gaps with confident filler.

  • Upload PDF, DOC, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, RTF, TXT, Markdown, EPUB, saved emails, scans and phone photos.
  • Bring a zipped Obsidian, Logseq, Bear or Notion vault, up to 2,000 notes per import.
  • Share a private link with a client, no account needed on their side.

How to move from Readwise in four steps

You do not have to cancel anything to try it. Most people keep Readwise for a month and run both side by side.

1

Export your highlights

On Readwise's Export page, pick CSV to download every highlight in one file, or Markdown if you want one file per book with your formatting.

2

Add the work you wrote

Upload the reports, proposals, talk transcripts and notes you actually reuse. This is the part Readwise never had.

3

Ask your real questions

Take three questions you asked yourself last week and run them. Where the answer says your files do not cover it, you have found a gap.

4

Decide on Readwise

If you still love the daily review, keep Lite at $5.59. If Reader was the habit you stopped, you can let the full plan lapse.

Consultants

Years of engagement reports and the books that shaped your methods. Ask how you handled a situation before and get your own answer back.

Coaches and course creators

Workbooks, session notes and the reading behind your program in one place, so client questions get answers inside what you actually teach.

Writers and newsletter authors

Every issue you published plus the highlights you drew on. Find the angle you already used before you repeat it.

Researchers and analysts

Papers you annotated and the briefs you wrote from them. Ask across both instead of rebuilding the argument from memory.

Who switches from Readwise to MentalClone

People whose income depends on what they already know, and who are tired of searching for it in four apps. The common thread is that their own documents matter at least as much as their reading.

When Readwise is still the better buy

We would rather you keep the right tool than switch and churn. Stay with Readwise if one of these is you.

You read on Kindle every day

Readwise syncs Kindle highlights automatically. We have no Kindle sync; you would export and upload.

The daily review is the point

Spaced resurfacing of highlights is Readwise's core feature. We answer questions, we do not email you highlights.

You want a read-later app

Reader saves articles, newsletters, RSS and PDFs to read. MentalClone is not a reader; it is a library you ask.

Your budget is $10 a month

Readwise and Recall Plus cost less than our Starter plan. We cost more because we answer from your own documents, not only from saved items.

For a full breakdown of what each Readwise plan includes, see our Readwise pricing guide. If your highlights mostly end up in a notes app, the Obsidian alternative comparison and the personal knowledge management app page cover that side of the decision.

Readwise alternative questions

What is the best alternative to Readwise?

+

It depends on what you want back. For a read-later app with AI chat over saved articles, Recall is the closest match. For highlights inside your notes, Obsidian with an export works. If the knowledge you hunt for lives in your own reports, memos and transcripts as well as your highlights, MentalClone answers from both in one library.

What is a good Readwise Reader alternative?

+

If you want a reading app, look at Recall or Matter, which both save articles and add AI on top. If Reader was really a way to ask questions across documents, a document library is a better fit: MentalClone reads PDF, Word, EPUB, Markdown and scans and answers only from them.

Is Readwise worth the money?

+

For heavy readers who highlight a lot, yes. The full plan at $9.99 a month billed yearly includes Reader, exports and library-wide Ghostreader chat. It is a weaker buy if you highlight little, or if what you need to find again is work you wrote yourself rather than what you read.

How much does Readwise cost?

+

Readwise Lite is $5.59 a month billed yearly and covers highlight review only. The full plan is $9.99 a month billed yearly ($119.88) or $12.99 month to month, and adds the Reader app plus exports to Notion and Obsidian. Both start with a 30-day trial, and academics get 50% off.

Can I export my highlights from Readwise?

+

Yes. Readwise has a CSV option on its Export page that downloads every highlight at once, and a Markdown export you can format with templates. You can also export a single book or article as Markdown. Either file uploads to MentalClone as it is.

Can I chat with my Readwise highlights?

+

Yes, inside Reader. Global Ghostreader searches your whole Reader library and answers with citations, and the default model is included in the subscription. It covers what you saved to read. It does not see the client files, notes and transcripts that never went into Reader.

Does MentalClone work with Kindle highlights?

+

Not directly. There is no Kindle sync. Readwise already pulls Kindle highlights in, so export them from Readwise as CSV or Markdown and upload that file. From then on your highlights answer questions alongside your own documents.

Ask your highlights and your own work at once

Export your Readwise CSV, add the reports you wrote, and ask the question you could not answer last week.
